Little has changed in ‘The Bay' since the last century with a history involving pirates, smugglers and press gangs. It is first mentioned in 1538 as a “fisher townlet of twenty boats” and fishing was the main livelihood here until the end of the 19th century. At its peak, Robin Hoods Bay's importance as a fishing centre surpassed that of Whitby! Despite the decline of the once thriving fishing industry you can still see local fishermen working on their nets and lobster pots before putting their boats out to sea.
The narrow winding streets and quaint cobbled pathways conceal many beautiful properties, some of which date back to the early 15th century.
There are many things to see and do right in the village – as well as so much in the area. You could park your car and just walk or cycle… or drive to the stunning North York Moors, visit Whitby (just 6 miles away) or the many other beautiful coastal and inland villages, like Sandsend, Staithes, Runswick, Grosmont, Goathland, Rosedale, Danby, Lealholm and Egton – to name just a few….
Robin Hood's Bay has a brilliant website for information on events, things to do, photo gallery, attractions, shopping, eating etc… See www.robin-hoods-bay.co.uk
